For those people who aren’t going to the 3D Printer Workshop, we recommend going to the HACKYIZU – Techyizu’s Hackathon this Saturday and Sunday (Dec 8, Dec 9). Hackyizu should be a great event for developers, designers, and tech enthusiasts to get together and build something cool over a weekend. Come to pitch your idea, join a team, or just hang out with people from startups, and tech companies like Microsoft and Google.

The Hackathon will be held at Innovation Works‘ offices in Yangpu District.

The event is free, and there will be free food, t-shirts, and even prizes!

Valentin is going to show us his recent project he worked on with Supernature named “Tablet Man” that’s loads of tablets, tron like suits and battery packs that will stop an airplane!

Sam Lynn will be presenting XZR magazine, a quarterly free bi-lingual magazine written by young reporters writing about things that inspire them but around technology, arts, music and also how to get involved.

Due to last weeks unfortunate event we had to cancel the Kinect workshop, its always good to register for events as this time we were able to contact almost everyone before they headed out, unfortunately Patrick’s stay is coming to an end and he’s off soon, so drop in and say hi! when he’s back lets hope he’ll do some more awesome workshops.

Tonight: we have Kelvin from Shanghai Ureal a large scale 3D printing house that wants to print your stuff! and hopefully a special announcement from Lucio on the “build your own 3D printer” workshop coming up!

We have an open spot this evening for ad-hoc presentation so feel free to take the stage, just announce yourself upon arrival so we can prepare things in advance.

Francesca will be presenting on design buildings with locally available materials with an example of a school in the Himalayas, not to be missed

Zhang Chi (张驰) will be presenting on building your own oscilloscope (those pricey things with squiggly lines going up and down) and the workshop he’s got running, if you sign up tonight, you’ll get a 100rmb discount on the workshop! that’s up to 40mhz frequency or 20mhz if you want a little cheaper, it’s USB!

Robotics Spectacular at XinCheJian!

Bring out your robots! We will have an evening dedicated to Robotics talks next Wednesday evening at XinCheJian (1035 Changle Rd, 2nd floor, Xuhui District, Shanghai, CHINA, 200031) from 19h00 to 21h00. Talks will be between 8 and 20 minutes each. You have a robot but no presentation? Feel free to demo it before and after the talks!

Prof. Dr. Rolf Pfeifer from the AI Lab at the University of Zurich will be talking about his work in robotics (such as Roboy) in a talk entitled “Embodied Intelligence”. Dr Pfeifer is the worldwide leader on how well designed intelligent bodies can dramatically reduce non-linear control complexity (“embodiment”) and the Deputy Director of the NCCR (National Competence Center for Research in Robotics) in Switzerland.

Dr Ricky Ye (叶琛) and Rockets Xia (夏青) from DFRobot will bring and present a set of their commercial robots and how they’re approaching development of robots with OpenSource and OpenHardware.

Spencer Featherstone and Edward Jiang (姜昊) will give an update on XinCheJian Swarm Robots. Our swarm robots placed second at the AFRON competition, just between Harvard and MIT!

Rodolfo “Rudy” Cossovich will show off making robots with Multiplo, the robot building system. Rudy has just recently successfully completed a round of fundraising on Kickstarter for Multiplo.

Barcamp Shanghai Fall 2012

This is a bit of a late follow up to the Barcamp Shanghai Fall 2012. Barcamp is an “unconference” where people come to share ideas, usually with a focus on technology. Over 500 people came to the event, and Xinchejian had a room to ourselves.

A feature packed Wednesday planned for this week, from @aGuegu to Ben Houge to China Haxlr8r Folks, as always come along and buy a beer or soft drink and listen to some great presentations, finished with a round of do-nothing-but-chat or build-something-awesome you decide! 7-9pm dont be lame, hit the hackerspace on your way home!

nixie tubes by aguegu

Weihong Guan (@aGuegu) a fellow hacker and researcher will be presenting his projects this evening, from Nixie tube heaven from the 70s to showing off his amazing 8x8x8 led cube, this guy makes his living by selling his inventions which can be found all over the internet. His awesome 8x8x8 cube kit will dazzle anyone and is the perfect table top conversation piece, with integrated arduino in a tiny tiny form factor driving 512 LEDS! plus 4 more for fun!

Cyril Ebersweiler started the haxlr8r.com, a hardware accelerator program based in Shenzhen. Haxlr8r people will come visit on Wednesday afternoon and hopefully stay to the evening, there is a high chance that Cyril will not be able to stay as him and his wife are currently expecting a new hacker in the family.

Ben Houge, with 16 years of experience developing video games, including 4 years at ubisoft shanghai working on Tom Clancy’s EndWar, he will be teaching the MAX/MSP workshop this weekend at xinchejian on saturday (http://xinchejian.com/event/?ee=143), a tool in which he creates most of his musical mayhem, i’ve seen this guy present before, and wow, quite the experience. he currently teaches in Boston area, where he teaches video game music at Berklee College and is also working on a research project with MIT http://mit.edu/music21/ on musicological analysis.
