We built a Pop Up Hackerspace in a container as part of the Make+ for accelerating Makers’ project through Art. This is first to be host at the Creative Carnival in Shanghai. It’s done and opened over the weekend! It has been a success attracting a lot of visitors interested in 3D printing, robotics and Maker Culture! People come to see projects by the local makers, take workshop on Arduino and 3D printing and having fun talking to the makers. The pop up hackerspace will start its journey around China after the Shanghai Maker Carnival on Oct 19-20.

There will be Internet of Things China 2013 Conference & Exhibitionin Shanghai from June 4 to 5. More information about the conference here.
Rob van Kranenburg founded Council, a think tank for the Internet of Things, to bring this latter perspective into the heart of the debates. He is Chair of the Working Group Societal of the IOT Forum, member of the Expert Group on IOT for the European Commission, and Stakeholder Coordinator for IoT-A. Mr. van Kranenburg will travel to Shanghai for IOT 2013 China.
Rob is good friends of both XinCheJian and Xindanwei and we are happy to have him coming to XinCheJian for a night of Internet of Things on June 5th. The event will start at 7pm in XinCheJian (1035 Changle Lu, 2F) featuring these speakers:
- Rob van Kranenburg: Internet of Things
- Dr. J. (Sjaak) Wolfert: SmartAgriFood
- David Li: Makers and IoT
The Internet of Things (IoT); imagine a world where everything can be both analogue and digitally approached – reformulates our relationship with objects – things- as well as the objects themselves. Currently we can discern two main blocks of thought on IoT. The first is a reactive framework of ideas and thought that sees IoT as a layer of digital connectivity on top of existing infrastructure and things. This position sees IoT as a manageable set of convergent developments on infrastructure, services, applications and governance tools. It is assumed that, as in the transition from mainframe to Internet some business will fail and new ones will emerge, this will happen within the current governance, currency end business models. The second is a proactive framework of ideas and thought that sees IoT as a severely disruptive convergence that is unmanageable with current tools, as it will change the notion of what data and what noise is from the supply chain on to ‘apps’. Why XCJ ?
As an artist that is passionated in science and electronic i found my place in Xinchejian. here I can cooperate with people that are from different cultures and expertises. Making stuff that link art and technology is my aim. Also its a good working atmosphere when doing some projects. Always a member is around for help or advise, help you to “make stuff”

Who are you?
Hey y’all, my name is IHan, the geek wannabe. I’m an interaction designer and an amateur cook. You’ll see me in Xinchejian a lot, mainly baking cookies and making Mojitos, not exactly high tech… but one day, it’ll be cookies with edible health monitoring chips and Mojitos with blood alcohol level reader straws;)
Why are you member of of XinCheJian?
I admire people who can make things and I hope if I hang out with the cool gang a lot, I might be able to be just as cool one day;)
People are very generous and open here. I’m always inspired to see how XCJ is pushing science and technology to the general public. Shanghai is very lucky to have this group of people and this space, and I’d love to see more people joining the force.
Also, I love the culture in XCJ. At work, everything is designed for a reason, so the “making for the sake of making” attitude in XCJ is very liberating.
