The simplicity of the circuit stems from the use of this cool oscillator: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpGOKGrcpAk A sawtooth waveform at approximately 50Khz, with a nearly-linear ramp, is produced by the S9014 BJT. This waveform is approximately from 5v to 9v: The guitar signal is 200-300mV peak to peak, and the sawtooth is scaled to match this amplitude. Both the guitar signal and the sawtooth are coupled to 1/2 the supply voltage, with a potentiometer used to fine tune the overlap between the signals. Finally, both signals are fed into a comparator (LM311), and the output from this drives the gate of a MOSFET. A 10nF filter capacitor is added to the sawtooth signal to reduce oscillations caused by feedback from the speaker via the power supply rails. The large power supply decoupling capacitance also helps to address this: without it, spikes appear in the oscillator waveform, and wild high frequency oscillations can appear in the output. Despite amplifying essentially only half the waveform, and various other limitations, the sound quality is surprisingly good. – Who are you? Thomas TEMPE; I’m from France. – What’s your job? Project manager in the automobile industry. – How and why did you start to learn hardware? When I was at 7, I got a computer then started learning Basic. As a teenager, I wanted to become a game developer. I go a diploma in computer science, but never actually got to work in that field. I did a few projects related to Open Source Software. A year ago, I bought an Arduino and started learning from Internet resources, as I usually do with software. Then I realized there was a hackerspace nearby! – What projects have you done? 1. I built a straw bale passive house in France. It had hundreds of visitors and even went on TV. 2. Initiated a Linux Users Group on my students campus. 3. Main developer of the Chinese Support add-on for Anki spaced repetition software (Python); Anki is a program which makes remembering things easy. Website: ankisrs.net/ 4. One day he determined to take control of his process of making mechanical components by building his own CNC milling machine.
