Michael Peng will host a series of workshops on 3D printing, to make ideas real. We will start from the basic knowledge, brainstorming, design with 3D model software, and finish with 3D printing your ideas.

Michael will show us from a small project, scan an daily object, toy, cups, etc… or a body part, finger, ear, ankle…and use the data to design a new object, and PRINT!
He will also show the basic knowledge of 3D printing, its’ beginning, development and the future.
Brainstorm, what can we do, what knowledge and tools should we have.
Cross discipline collaboration and cool ideas.
Workshops Study: 3 or 4 weekend of nights
Learn how to use a pritner, what is STL file, which software can be used for 3D modeling
Learn how to use Rhino and Grasshopper.
3Ds MAX & Sketchup.
Processing, notes, arduino.
Make your Own: 4 to 6 weekend of weeknights
Workshop will based on students’ personal projects. We will use the 3D scanning, printing and software knowledge we learned, to make individual projects: toys, jewellery, models, interactive projects, robots….

Busy week for Helper and Assistive device group

Helper Sessions and Assistive Devices group is growing, another new member joined last week and is learning Arduino – from blinking LED to accelerometer! A big feature was added to the air-mouse – a virtual mouse button. The virtual button (gesture) is controlled by horizontal shaking as seen in the video. You can also see the mouse control needs a little fine tuning. Code is is on github. The Helper sessions are about sharing and learning anything. The Assistive devices are used as one focus for learning. If you would like to join in and just explore a big range of hardware including the new Xadow, a wearable Arduino, that has eight add on modules and a wearable frame to mount the modules inside, all just shipped directly from the SeeedStudio research lab – hence at least one minor issue to fix. There are also bluetooth devices, 3D printing, eyetracking and heaps of code to write, so come and join in Thursday night from 7:30, no experience required, just Xinchejian membership. Group members also arrange to meet at other times, so make contact directly or via the mailing list to arrange! Several wiki updates including this new page for heaps more good stuff to work on! Processing workshop went well on the weekend, for those that missed it, well worth checking out when it comes up again. just a friendly reminder that if you havn’t paid your membership dues, please do so at the space. in August paul will be running a free Arduino workshop for members only make sure you have your own Arduino kit, buy through the space to support XinCheJian. also let us know what you think about the new design on the xinchejian website. A friendly reminder that XinCheJian is a hackerspace and not a co-working space/cheap office space, its fine to work on your projects but not cool to run your business out of the space, people involved in this are kindly being asked to move to a co-working facility, we can make introductions if you need them. Architect & Professor Biayna Bogosian from Columbia University will be giving two workshops this coming weekend.
July 13/Crowd Simulation in PROCESSING: Originally developed for computational media design and interaction education, Processing platform is arguably the easiest programming language to learn and experiment code-based digital media design. This workshop will introduce focused use of Processing in order to simulate crowd behavior using real-time or simulated data.

July 14/Motion Tracking in GRASSHOPPER: Originally developed as a plug-in for Rhinoceros, one of the most versatile 3D NURBS modeling software in the market today, Grasshopper (GH) is a generative design tool that has been supported with a wide array of add-ons developed by an international community of programmers. During this workshop, students will have a quick introduction to the software environment of Rhino and GH and then we will focus quickly to specific add-ons developed for GH, such as Firefly to capture, translate and abstract movement using web-cam, smart-phones or Kinect into 3D geometry and visual images.

- Biayna will present her research on design workflow automation that utilizes various physical and non-physical factors to add information resolution to the built environments. Biayna Bogosian is an architect interested in computational design and highly localized materialization processes that respond to data patterns. Biayna holds a Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University. Since 2011, Biayna has taught digital media seminars and design studios at Columbia University GSAPP, and USC School of Architecture.
- Spencer Featherstone the key ingredient in swarm robots is back and is going to discuss his progress in trying to make affordable, reasonably functional assistive aids, a call for interest in having one or more mini hack nights/weekends, or individuals who want to get involved, or create longer term project/s to develop and publish.
